Peter Kay – London O2 Arena – Sunday 7th November 2010 (Live Review)

It’s been seven years since “Britain’s favourite comedian” Peter Kay completed his record-breaking Mum Wants a Bungalow tour and the follow-up has been a long time coming for many of the 20,000 people present at tonight’s show in the O2 Arena. Although Kay is known for being one of the best stand-up acts in the country for his popular observational comedy routines, it’s probably fair to say that his dedication to the cause has become somewhat questionable since the release of his last DVD. However, tonight’s audience doesn’t seem too concerned. In fact, it may as well have been yesterday that the momentous catchphrase “Garlic bread!” was first heard.

Foals - O2 Academy, Bristol - November 4th 2010 (Live Review)

I’m only 20, but fuck me am I old. And grumpy! When you go to gigs and start picking out things that annoy you more than picking out the things you enjoy, there has to be something wrong: Drunken people standing uncomfortably close to you and the fear of them sloshing their pint down your coolest shirt; Girls complaining about being in mosh pits, even when they chose to stand at the front. And then there’s my personal favourite, out of time hand clapping! I mean if you can’t clap in time to a song that I’m going to assume you know well, as you have paid to see the band who wrote it, then you shouldn’t really be calling yourself a fan. Or perhaps you’re just hugely rhythmically retarded; in which case I hate you equally! All of the above managed to rear their ugly heads tonight.

Feeder - O2 Academy, Bristol - October 27th 2010 (Live Review)

There are few bands in today's cut-throat music making industry that can say they are as hardworking as the outfit that top the bill at tonight's Bristol Academy, Feeder. One of the main reasons why I enjoy listening to Feeder is the fact that they make good, solid indie-rock music and have been constant throughout their years whilst still seeming to be genuine blokes. You're never going to watch a live Feeder show and depart feeling disappointed. On the road promoting their latest studio offering 'Renegades', Thursday evening, October 27th, Feeder swung by a sold-out Bristol O2 Academy to deliver yet another live performance of their vast catalogue to their devoted army of fans.

Relentless’ Energy drinks sponsoring of the Garage continues with three days of music at the venue incorporating both the main stage downstairs and the tiny room upstairs. Dub Pistols - The Globe, Cardiff - 15th October 2010 (Live Review)

Walking in to The Globe for the first time I was struck by how different their approach to live music seems to be – from the incense burning in the entranceway and stairwell to the lack of stereotype “Eye-Candy” girls and boys manning the tickets, etc it was obvious that they had a very original approach.

Now, I’ve never been totally sold on Yeasayer being a ‘great’ band. Yes, ‘Ambling Alp’ was a sure fire amazing track, but ‘ONE’ and for that matter the rest of ‘Odd Blood’ never really grew on me. But after being tipped off by a friend that these guys were pretty mental live I was more than willing to give them a chance. But before Yeasayer had a chance to win me around, there was support in the form of Brooklyn quartet Suckers.

Joe Bonamassa - Colston Hall, Bristol - October 14th 2010 (Live Review)

Is it just me or are the guitarists of today in a league of their own, battling for the year's best album? Not long ago we had the former Guns N Roses icon Slash kick-off the trend with the release his debut solo collection of face-melters. Since then the legendary Eric Clapton has dropped his first batch of new material since 2005, more Jimi Hendrix rare and newly-discovered material has surfaced and renowned electric guitarist Joe Satriani has released his fourteenth studio record, ''Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards'. Certainly the most uniquely-titled record of the year if not the best.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly - Electric Ballroom, Camden, London - October 13th 2010 (Live Review)

It’s hard to believe that only 4 years ago Essex boy Sam Duckworth AKA Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly was playing gigs with just his guitar and a laptop. Adding a small brass section to the line-up, Sam set about bringing his acoustic folk-pop to a wider audience, playing a string of major UK festivals including Oxegen, Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds festivals and SXSW. Gradually building a name for himself, Get Cape’s sound has matured with the band’s progression, with new album ‘Get Cape Wear Cape Fly’ sounding a long way from 2006’s ‘Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager’, featuring an increased emphasis on electric guitar and keys than either of his previous two albums.

Mona - Rough Trade East - 30th September 2010 (Live Review)

Without meaning to start things off on in the melodramatic, I have a confession to make: I am not seen to be scene. I can’t pull off skinny jeans, I wear tops which at least try to cover my torso and I’ve never had a barcode tattooed on my arm. It’s never really been a problem, in all honesty. However, stepping into Rough Trade record shop in Shoreditch (a veritable Mecca for music lovers), I’m suddenly greeted with looks that show I’m clearly not trying hard enough. Fear not, I have learned my lesson: I’ve emptied out Topman in Kingston, and as soon as I find the right Camus quote I’m getting a tattoo yeah, I’m getting ink done.

Dark Tranquillity - Camden Underworld, London - September 28th 2010 (Live Review)

As one of the founders of the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene in the early nineties, one would expect Dark Tranquillity to be either gone by now (like At The Gates) or producing rafts of substandard material (like In Flames). Instead they are doing neither. Dark Tranquillity are the true kings of melodeath yet have never gained as much recognition as their peers.

3OH!3 - Koko, London - September 29th 2010 (Live Review)

Just down the road from the centre of Camden ‘Koko’ sits tall and proud, rocking an almost Moulin Rouge look.  The grade II listed building has played host to numerous bands including 30 Seconds to Mars, Madonna, Coldplay & Queens of the Stone Age.  In a couple of weeks the now infamous Example is also hosting a gig at the former Camden Palace.  Tonight however 3Oh!3 are the venues occupants.  Having shot to stardom through collaborations with Ke$ha & Katy Perry (and in their own with ‘Don’t Trust Me’) the duo easily pack out the 1,410 capacity venue.

Brooklyn based band MGMT made a record, called it Oracular Spectacular and sold a shed load of copies. Big hitters ‘Kids’, ‘Electric Feel’ and ‘Youth’ saw them burst into the mainstream, pick up a Grammy nomination and cement a place in Rolling Stones top 20 albums of the decade.

Southsea Festival - Portsmouth - 18th Sept 2010 (Live Review)

As we arrived on Albert Road, Southsea, it was awfully quiet for a music festival. That may be down to the fact that we were forced to get there almost an hour before doors due to the poor nature of train times running through Guildford. Southsea Fest has evolved from a two venue festival in 2007 to a one that now spans 16, from The Wedgewood Room to The King’s Theatre in 2010. One of the best things about the festival though is it's link with the Ellen MacArthur Trust, thus making all profits go towards something meaningful, good job.

Fibz & Shamele$$ - Club Vision @ The Pier, Bognor Regis - 18th Sept 2010 (Live Review)

If you’re going to throw a party on a pier I would guess that there are few venues better than Club Vizion and few headliners currently better than the DJ duo Fibz & Shamele$$. Having already displayed their unique style at both Glastonbury and Bestival this year the pair certainly know how to make a crowd move and, what’s more, obviously enjoy doing it too! Behind the decks this pair are highly animated, bouncing and dancing almost as much as the happy revellers on the dancefloor and with a seemingly endless amount of energy.

The Script - Leeds O2 Academy - 12th Sept 2010 (Live Review)

The Courteeners - Fibbers Launch Night (Live Review)

The flyers promised the folk of York, that Fibbers was to become the “Biggest Thing To Hit York Since The Vikings.” A bold statement indeed, but one that has now become totally justified. Tokyo Industries claim they have only spent £250,000 on the refurbishment. Well considering what the old venue was like, compared with the new, they have certainly obtained value for money. A top of the range Funktion One sound system, which due to the new layout, actually projects the sound around the venue, unlike the old layout, which swallowed up the sound. A new stage and floor, which allows a good view of the action, from almost anywhere within the venue and a fantastic, very Factory, decor, with subtle touches of atmospheric magic everywhere.

The Walkmen - London Islington Academy - 25 Aug 2010 (Live Review)

It was a standard British August evening: rain was pouring torrentially and Islington academy was packed to near capacity. The crowd was a surprising mix of young, old and a plethora of A-list celebrities (The lead singer from Chapel Club and a Steven merchant look-a-like). First up were support act Avi Buffalo, a three-piece band known for their sunny Californian pop hooks. They came onstage to a muted applause and launched head-first into an impressive set. Lead singer and guitarist Avi Buffalo stole the show, flooding the venue with intense his guitar strokes: with the layers of reverb and piercing delay, the casual listener would have been forgiven for thinking there were two or three guitarists on stage. Despite his hit and miss falsetto vocals, the band won over a tentative crowd with energetic performances of recent release What's In it for? and indie-pop anthem Remember Last Time.

Galtres Festival - Day 2 - 29th August (Live Review)

Following Saturday’s musical treats, Sunday the 29th August at Galtres Festival had its work cut out to match the previous day’s brilliance. But it managed it. Although the strong wind tried to blow down the main stage, the performing soon got underway. On The Oxman Stage were Trophy Club. A York four piece, incorporating the usual three piece sound, with added acoustic guitar. The catchy, plodding music was rhythmic and melodic, with rising and falling tempo and depth. The lovely climbing and ascending electric guitar riffs were fantastic and the vocals from Ollie Webb very good too. Trophy Club may be a little weak lyrically, but musically and vocally they were very good and very entertaining.

Galtres Festival - Day One - Sat 28th Aug (Live Review)

Galtres Festival, in Crayke, near York, on the 28th and 29th August was an absolute success. This fantastic little festival offered something for everyone, a good day out or a great weekend away. Real ale and cider sampling, family fun or plenty for the music fan. The festival was a huge success and even the British summertime’s attempts to spoil the party could not. The festival donates revenue to numerous charities, including the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, St Monica’s Hospital, The Arts Barge Project and Impact Young Heroes. The Arts Barge Project, a charity for young people in York, requires special mention for their thoroughly entertaining sets over the weekend.

Philadelphia Grand Jury at York Stereo (Live Review)

Wow! Before I even talk about the music, what about the show? Philadelphia Grand Jury played an unforgettable set in Stereo, York on Monday 23rd August. Lively, energetic and quite literally all over the place, The Philly Jays entertained from start to finish. Bouncing all over the place, swapping instruments and eventually ending up, playing in the middle of the crowd. Musically, the Australian duo were brilliant, technically spot on with their playing of bass, guitar and keyboards and the group’s drummer, 54 year old American Calvin, who has played as a session drummer with the likes of Earth, Wind and Fire and Sonny Stitt in his time, was brilliant also, keeping up the blazing tempo of MC Bad Genius and Berkfinger’s warp speed set.

Sheffield Rocks - All That Promotions Local Unsigned Night (Live Review)

Sheffield’s unsigned act night at the Walkabout Bar was definitely a hit, held on Sunday the 22nd August and organised by Natalie Beard, of All That Promotions, the event granted four local, unsigned acts a live set, something which can be difficult to arrange, when unsigned. The night included four acts, Chloe-Jade Simmons, Tarka Dawn, Shamble Street and Jax Colon, a mixture of acoustic, indie and rock, played in an intimate venue, in front of a small, appreciative crowd.

Gallows - White Rabbit, Plymouth - 5th August 2010 (Live Review)

A few years ago, shortly after being voted the coolest person of 2007 by NME readers, Gallows’ vocalist and resident madman Frank Carter told the magazine that his band “won’t last five years”. However, it’s now been exactly five years since their formation and the Watford-based punk-rock group still appear to be going strong. Despite now being an unsigned band since splitting from Warner, following the release of last year’s ‘Grey Britain’, the five-piece have experienced a great deal of success, both here and abroad.

The Littlemores EP Launch at Fibbers, York - (Live Review)

Can these guys do any wrong? Winning the Battle Of The Bands, releasing a brilliant EP and then playing the most amazing headline gig. On Friday the 30th July, Fibbers in York hosted The Littlemores EP launch party as the four piece provided the crowd with a memory which is sure to last. I have seen these guys play a few times before, I have also championed their fantastic EP Idle Idols II, however on Friday they blew me away and played, what can only be described as one of the best gigs I have ever seen and I am ever likely to see.

Alex Gardner – Peterborough Embankment – 18th July (LIVE REVIEW)

It wasn't an Alex Gardner show I went to see. I was dragged along (admittedly not entirely reluctantly) to watch JLS on tour for my little brother's birthday, and Alex Gardner happened to be one of the support acts. Beforehand, I wasn't overly excited about his performance - I'd only really heard the single 'I'm Not Mad', and it was one of those songs that never really struck a chord with me, not seeming particularly memorable or special. However from the moment Gardner and his band came onstage, it became apparent they were going to be a pretty special support act. They were introduced as having supported Whitney Houston, Leona Lewis and (not as impressively) Scouting For Girls. They'd supported Leona and Whitney? They're not exactly singers to my personal taste, but there's no denying they're huge names in the music world.

A Certain Ratio - FAC251, Manchester - July 17th 2010 (Live Review)

On the 17th July in Factory’s new venue, FAC251 in Manchester something rather special happened. One of Factory's original bands, A Certain Ratio came home. ACR who were one of the many legendary acts which Factory had signed for the company during the late 70’s, played in front of a packed audience, who crammed into the small, intimate venue. We spoke to a guy who had travelled all the way from the States to the North-West venue, just to see the group. Now that is commitment and tells you a little something about ACR. All around there was an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation as the hordes waited for ACR to play their set.

The Coral - O2 Shepherd Bush Empire - July 15th 2010 (LIVE REVIEW)

Wednesday night at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire began with Cherry Ghost, whose material sounded like it could have been lifted from the main acts latest album. It turned out to be indicative of the music that followed and The Coral launched into an eagerly subdued introduction with ‘More Than A Lover’ and ‘Roving Jewel’. The crowd watched on with what seemed like more energy than the band, whose static performance was a little sedating.

For the second time in two months, I am deaf, dizzy and totally hoarse - or should that be foal? I thought there could be nothing like the Nottingham gig I revelled in a month or so ago on the "Total Life Forever" tour, but the Oxford indie-math rockers not only seem to never fail to deliver, it appears their live shows just continuously swell with glorious intensity as their music develops further poignancy and the madcap intellectuals at its centre mature into equines in the prime of their youth - there is no stopping Foals.

Dogs - Fibbers, York - June 20th (LIVE REVIEW)

I met The Dogs before the gig and I felt I was going to witness something special that night at Fibbers, York on the 20th June. Unfortunately this was an anti-climax, when I spoke with the band and especially the lead singer I found a deep, passionate character, full of self belief and emotion with a definite darkness. The group as a unit seemed very focused and full of belief in what they were doing. I found the performance quite disappointing, probably because I had built this gig up so much, especially after the early meeting. I actually expected the front man, Johnny Cooke to be a deep character, crying out for help with his lyrics, totally lost in the music, instead I found his performance almost half hearted, lacking energy, enthusiasm or passion. There is no doubt he can write, his lyrics are very deep and filled with emotion, quite brilliant actually. Perhaps that was the problem, Johnny backed away from answering a question about what he chose for inspiration, when writing, earlier that evening in an interview, perhaps, the lyrics were too personal and emotional to really get into, or perhaps he was just off form, the group had just travelled from a gig in Birmingham the previous night, which had obviously been a heavy night. There were glimpses of vocal talent, but they were far too few and far between as he seemed to wade through the performance, rather than really getting into it and giving it his all. His voice was quite average save for a few high points when he seemed to really open up his lungs.

Hockey - Fibbers, York - 17th June (Live Review)

Fibbers in York hosted American 4 piece Hockey on Thursday 17th June and they electrified the place. The group who play a blend of dance music meets indie had the whole venue dancing as they played there faultless set. The sound is not unlike that of LCD Sound System, and then in a flash, the lead singer Benjamin Grubin brings out his harmonica and acoustic guitar as we are treated to some Bob Dylan style folk music, all with plenty of rock thrown in, the drumming was aggressive and high tempo and the bass, from their bare footed bass player, exceptional, as he roamed up and down the fret board, playing high tempo, warm bass. The guitar riffs were brilliant and metallic and the quality of the vocals, fantastic, delivering clever, catchy lyrics with amazing effect. There too was a feel of The Tin Tins, to their sound and the groups energy on stage, especially when the lead singer broke out the drum sticks and treated us to a barrage of drumming during a couple of the groups tracks.

The Klaxons – Plymouth White Rabbit – 2nd June 2010 (LIVE REVIEW)

It’s always been somewhat curious that certain bands, who have become accustomed to filling huge venues and headlining festivals, occasionally choose to play small clubs for a more intimate show. Why perform in front of hundreds of fans when thousands would be willing to come along? Is it because it provides them with an ideal forum for trying out new material? Or is it merely a charitable offering to the fans that are situated further afield from the usual tour stops? Either way, that is exactly what dance-punk trio the Klaxons have opted to do. Tonight’s gig at the 400-capacity White Rabbit in Plymouth is one of several intimate dates that also include Gloucester, Southend and Colchester.

In the small, intimate venue, an atmosphere built as a good crowd of loyal Yorkshire fans gathered to see Wakefield 4 piece, the Humour unleash their heart and "northern" soul, during their album launch party at The Cockpit, Leeds. Providing a taster of their debut album "Your Gunna Pay" which is released this month. The group put together a good set of some of their established tracks, which there loyal fans, obviously new well, as they sang along, some tracks from their new album and a couple of even newer tracks. They rocked the house with their infectious blend of heavy rock meets pop, catchy chorus's and awesome guitar riffs.

Marina and the Diamonds - The Old Fire Station Bournemouth - May 13th 2010 (LIVE REVIEW)

Marina and the Diamonds took to the stage at TOFS in Bournemouth on Thursday night as part of her mammoth UK tour. Although a relative unknown a year ago, Marina Diamandis, better known by her stage name Marina and the Diamonds, has shot to fame on the back of a Critics Choice nomination at this years Brits and the top 5 success of her debut album 'The Family Jewels'.
